Lake Taupo New Zealand

Our drive to Lake Taupo was as great as the drive from Auckland to Rotorua, winding up and down, I had a blast driving once again!!

Huka Falls is just a few minutes north of the town of Taupo – if you are coming from Rotorua you can’t miss it. Lisa and I parked our car in one of the many car parks and walked down to the falls which is about 30 seconds from the main parking lot. The falls aren’t so much falls as they are rapids. I was expecting this big waterfall. Oh well, they were very beautiful none the less. Lisa and I walked around the area for a bit but retreated back to our car fairly quickly in anticipation of the long ride left to the city of Wellington.

Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo

After driving through the town of Taupo, Lisa and I couldn’t resist stopping and taking a few pictures of us and Lake Taupo. The lake is so big and has towering mountains that surround its edges, it’s quite surreal.

The drive from Lake Taupo was quite interesting. Near the end of the lake along the number 1 highway you start driving into the mountains and start encountering these signs that tell you to slow down to 25 KM in the turns. In some of the corners you are literally a few hundred feet higher then the lake, and the roads are very narrow.

Dessert

Dessert

After the mountainous region we drove through a desert section which took us about an hour and a half to drive through, there is nothing in site except for a big mountain in the middle of the dessert and the highway. After the dessert section we were once again back into the winding up and down hill driving, the fun stuff!! There was an exceptional amount of highway work being done between this stretch and we had to slow down quite frequently as there was only a single lane.
